From The Archives – 2004

Unfortunate Background, Charleston, South Carolina This is one of my favorite "candid" shots of all time, just because I love the ironic juxtaposition of the stop sign behind the just-married couple. I might have also called this "Too Late."
Unfortunate Background, Charleston, South Carolina. This is one of my favorite “candid” shots of all time, just because I love the ironic juxtaposition of the stop sign behind the just-married couple. I might have also called this “Too Late.”

I recently had reason to go back through my files for a project I am working on to free up some storage space on my hard drives.  A (very) few may find that subject interesting, so I’ll try to include that in a future post, once the idea is more thoroughly developed.  In the meantime, I excavated some long-forgotten photos in my Lightroom catalog, dating back to my very first digitally-originated photos from my Canon G5, which I acquired in late 2004.

The G5 was the camera that convinced me to make the move from film to digital.  Even though it was a measly 5 megapixel point & shoot, the fact that I could get some pretty darned nice photos from it without having to scan film was the clincher.  I was shooting medium format film at the time, and while I loved the images and the overall aesthetic of MF, being able to skip the scanning step was incredibly freeing.  Of course we now spend that time in Lightroom or Photoshop, but we didn’t realize that at the time!

I’ll try to post photos from subsequent years as I go, but for now this is a blast from my (photo) past.  Nothing extraordinary, but a whole lot of fun!

  1. These are nice looking photos, and in this form, on my monitor, indistinguishable from anything that might come out of a new model camera. As I am sans camera these days maybe I should look for a used G5 on eBay 🙂

    1. Thank you, Cedric. It’s actually a great little camera – I need to get it out again and use it, just for fun. I’d offer to send it to you but it probably needs a fresh battery, and it would cost more to ship than you could buy one for there! Plus it is a bit of a sentimental collector’s item to me. 😉

  2. I was about to say the same thing as Cedric. You’d never know that these were from “back in the day”, an old digital camera. I rather like going back into my archives and looking at photos from my older, smaller megapixel camera.

    A very nice collection, Tom!

    1. Thanks, Paul. I thought of you as I went through some of these because I figured you would recognize some of the locations.

We STILL need to catch up – let’s do that soon!

  3. Great series of images. Not only are the G series cameras quite capable of taking quality images they are small and easy to travel with. I used one when working as a flight attendant. I shot in raw format because I was not as pleased with their jpeg files. My favorite images are the blue door and the white arches.

    1. The G series has always been a capable camera. A friend of mine made beautiful photos with a G3, and the G5 was also impressive, as it convinced me to give up film. Not a small feat for someone coming from MF film!

Until I got my XT1 I frequently used my G12 as a travel camera. Now that I have the Fuji, and because the photos from my phone are so good, I seldom have the desire to carry a point & shoot any more. My son just picked up a Canon G9X for an upcoming trip, and I must say it is a sweet little camera.
