Kathy & I headed to Roanoke, VA this past weekend, and as we often do we took the “slow way,” stopping at Mabry Mill, on the Blue Ridge Parkway at MP 177 in Virginia. There’s a little restaurant there and some of their buckwheat pancakes are “just the thing” if you like that sort of thing.
The mill itself is probably the single most photographed thing on the Parkway, so I don’t even aim my camera in its general direction these days, unless there is something really special to shoot. After our sumptuous breakfast we took a few minutes to wander the grounds before heading back up the road. They were setting up for their weekend demonstrations, and I got a couple of nice shots in the blacksmith shop.
Here are a few photos from Mabry Mill to satisfy the curious until I get the Roanoke photos processed.
We often stop at Mabry Mill when we’re heading north on the parkway. I’ve never eaten there as it’s usually busy/crowded but those buckwheat pancakes sound good. It’s a nice place to stretch the legs and answer the call of nature. 🙂
I love the shot of the fire in the blacksmith forge — such rich reds, blues and yellows.
Thanks, Earl. The forge shot had very little “work” done on it, the colors were that good.
We were talking about how that part of the Parkway would make a nice day trip for us. Let’s make plans to head up that way some weekend.
That sounds good to me…we’ll do it…when it cools off just a bit? 🙂
Okay, now I’ve gotta got to Marby Mill and not just for the pancakes. I like the image of the fire pit but love the light on the blacksmith. Ya did good, again! I like it when you and Kathy venture out.
Thanks, Monte. We sure do have a lot of fun, and we do tend to eat well, too. 🙂
I really like the shots in the blacksmith shop but the vine on the fense is especially nice.
Ken, you seem to have a fondness for my “quieter” scenes. Me too!
Hey, I met that guy about 6 years ago. His name is Gray, and as he told me, just like the color! 🙂 http://www.paullesterphoto.com/wordpress/2006/08/29/blue-ridge-journey/
I need to get back up there. I’ve never stopped and eaten, but it sure sounds good! Looks like I’ll have to make a breakfast run! LOL
