Kathy & I have very fond memories of our visit to Maui last year, and one of our favorite places was the town of Lahaina. It’s heartbreaking to realize that everything we saw there is now gone, lost to fire. Some of the structures there were over 100 years old, including the old courthouse and the historic Pioneer Inn. Aerial views of the waterfront show only the walls of the courthouse building still standing. Our hearts go out to the people there.

I was stationed at Hickam AFB on Oahu back in 1970-1972. I regret not making a trip to the other islands. Yet, until I’ve taken my last breath it is never too late. My heart goes out to those who have lost so much. Thanks for sharing your images and experiences visiting there.
My favorite liquor store manager/philosopher recently said: “Life is short and when you have the opportunity to experience certain things, you have to make it happen. It is so simple to do nothing or do the easiest thing possible, and you can spend your whole life doing that.” There is no question that we all have our limitations, but trying to minimize regrets is something we shouldn’t overlook. I abhor the concept of a “bucket list” as a source of potential disappointment, but also acknowledge that for many of us a defined set of objectives is necessary.
We’re even more glad than before that we had a chance to experience Maui, and while it will exist after this, much of what we saw when were there is now gone.
I have friends who live out that way and, thankfully, they are okay. A very sad day for a lot of folks.
Yes, a terrible situation for all, slightly better for those who lived through it.
